After the first two important battles of the Mexican War, Assistant Adjutant General W. W. Bliss assigned General W. O. Butler to assume the command of the 1st Division of Volunteers. This is General Butler's order appointing G. W. Lay and J. R. Butler as his aides-de-camp.
